satisfaction

today i missed the ocean. i missed it in that way when you need to walk for a long time looking at the same thing and hearing the same sounds so your thoughts can stay as the focus with out added stimuli to process.  just the feet turning the sand, the waves crashing, the water lapping, and the horizon forever.  that feeling of space and breathing- i miss it.

i've been reading the book of Genesis, the story of adam and eve, the fall, original sin.  i've been thinking about that tree in the middle of a garden, the forbidden fruit, the one thing they weren't allowed to have.  what is interesting is that they were not lacking.  they were not hungry, they were not with out options or variety, they were satisfied.  they even walked with God in the garden. they were living in harmony.  i wonder how long they lived like that before the tree began to call to them?  days? months? years?  i wonder if it was only after having it pointed out to them, that they even really noticed that it was missing?

they chose it because they wanted more- a lack of satisfaction. they chose it because someone told them they should, someone told them something was missing, someone told them they could.

and when they ate- it wasn't just that they disobeyed and got sent out of the garden and had pain with childbirth and work to till the soil- it was that they became aware of an emptiness that they had never known before.  an emptiness that actually wasn't there before.  they had no idea what would befall them with that one choice.

in reaching for more- for extra- for even better- they got way worse.  they went into negative numbers.  suddenly everything changed. suddenly their internal peace and okay-ness was wrecked.

are we satisfied? do we have enough? are we grabbing for more? do we actually think when we get what we are reaching for we will be happier? or will it just bring an emptiness that we didn't have before?

living in a place of satisfaction keeps us from falling.  choosing to be okay with what we've been given, to appreciate it and hold it and embrace it, keeps us happy.  being content, brings contentment.  and that is what we all want- what we are all searching for.

peace. happiness. wholeness. fullness.
and space and breathing.
