it's the first sunday in advent. there is snow on the ground and the trees are naked. the colors here are browns and grays and some dusky greens, and white, the ground and the sky. i miss the warm sun and the bright greens and the sounds and smells of uganda. we are back in new england. we are back on furlough- for a time of renewal. of restoration. a time of remembering and of forgetting, for looking back and for looking forward. a time of rest. a time of drawing near to God and each other.
i arrived on yom kippur- the day of atonement- the holiest day of the jewish year. i came to take the medical boards, and to be with one who was sick. one who was like a second father to me, one who has now passed. i'm so thankful to have been near him in his transition- to see the freeing of his spirit.
now it is the first day of advent- the season we await the coming of Jesus- the birth of Love- the divine touching humanity- hope. we await the promise that we are not alone in our brokenness - that we are loved even though whatever- that our God of second chances is really a God of seventy chances- that we fall into His arms and they catch us. how deeply beautiful is that?
this is not the time of the year that i would choose to be here. it's cold, i'm cold. the kids are cooped up in the house and the sun goes away at 4:30- there are more hours of darkness than light. but we await The light. The light that shines, glows, brings forth, radiates joy and hope and renewal. and in that light is warmth and safety, goodness and wholeness.
this is also my favorite time of the year- no matter where i am- i am with the ones i love- and there too, is warmth and safety, goodness and wholeness.
