mending

wow.  this missionary stuff is hard work.  it's late.  i've been re-working our website- we've been trying to 'brand' ourselves- to explain this thing we're doing- because it's important- because we don't want to misrepresent any of it.  because words are beautiful, fragile little things that hold so much meaning- and that meaning varies depending on who's eyes are reading them- what histories are interpreting them.  so we need to be gentle and careful with our words.

mike and i have such similar souls- but they dress differently. and this can make things very confusing- especially when you're picking your souls team color. especially when you get so focused that you forget the naked truth of it- we actually do care about the same things.  but in our forgetting, we end up arguing about the huge social issues of the world. issues that have library shelves devoted to them- and university students spending semesters studying them-  like is poverty at the route of all injustice? and how do we define poverty anyway? and after a while- we come down to the simple fact that we both believe we should combat injustice, we should improve health, we should teach social responsibility- and that we're going to do that in Uganda- together.

language seems to be a theme this week.  when you're talking about things like 'human rights' and 'injustice' and 'poverty' they are so loaded- so emotive- but they can also be thrown around too casually. you can't forget that behind those big words are faces- people - their lives- and that is what we need to care about.

"Man is born broken.  He lives by mending.  The Grace of God is glue."  Eugene O'Neill

it's all about being broken by the brokenness. and living out the mending.  and embracing the Grace.

goodnight.
