i like mike

when i was about 26, and had platinum blonde hair, i met mike at the airport as he was coming home from a business trip.  this was in the pre-9/11 days when you could meet people at the gate when they were getting off the plane- remember that?  anyway, i was wearing a black jean miniskirt and tights and heels and carrying an "I LIKE MIKE" campaign sign that i'd snatched out of someones yard on the way to the airport.
of course mike was the last one off the plane, so i got to enjoy the entourage of guys saying, "i'm mike!" until he arrived. ha ha.

but i do like mike- in fact i LOVE mike.  i feel so very lucky and blessed to be with mike.  i can't believe that we found each other at age 18 and were brave enough to trust our instincts and get married young.

here are the top 10 reasons why I LOVE MIKE (admittedly idea stolen from my dear friend kim- who LOVES her man- but thinks mines alright too :)

#10. wile e coyote super genius

i can't imagine anyone i'd rather be stranded with in a tricky situation.

this guy could contend with macgyver and bear grylls.   he can devise a plan.  he can think on his feet.  he can work hard, create, think of all the things i wouldn't think of, and make it happen. he's also brave and strong and smart and would protect me from wild animals, or large insects, or a bad purchase or a my own crazy ideas (like getting a dog right now- as if we don't have enough going on!)

#9  boy scout?

it's kind of related to his wiel e- ness, but at all times this man has: a bottle opener, a swiss army knife and a bandana, even when wearing a tux.  you'd be amazed at how handy those things are.

#8 jack of all trades master of some

mike can fix anything- even things he's never tried to fix before.  this is very useful and important living in africa where things seem to break a lot- and most people don't know how to fix them.  he's fixed extension cords, lamps, the car, broken furniture, several electronic toys- and most impressive and most recently- the toilets.  this man can plumb!

#7 he's a really great dad

no really.  the guy likes to play with his kids, not just read to them or watch sports with them.  he loves a day full of legos, forts, soccer, and cartoons.  at the pool, he doesn't read a book, he tosses the kids around and gives rides in the water.  he's also not afraid to set the limits and be firm- i especially like, " the most important thing boys is to respect your mom." :)

#6  he's not afraid to put on an apron

the man can cook! we aren't talking toast and eggs or spaghetti, he can make a mean carbonara and an even meaner curry.  the other day he made chapatis.  he'll make chicken broth with the left over chicken bones.  sometimes he's just in the mood to make a pie.

#5  he can shake his booty and it looks good too

this guy gets better looking with age, and i mean it! and when we go to a dance party- unlike most men there, my man will shake it.

#4  he is an artist, and he makes things that last

when we were dating we lived about 2 hours away from each other and we wrote letters (which we still have).  he would sometimes send me pictures he'd painted, or little sketches instead of words- they were beautiful.  i was in love.

the man can also design a building that is beautiful and functional and passionate (and i think a building can be that). just look.

#3  he's stood the test of time

after 22 years together- i'm still crushin' on him.  i enjoy being around him even more.  the man will still will surprise me with random facts he knows, or some funny story i've never heard before, or a memory that i've forgotten, that will leave me crying in laughter.

#2  he doesn't forget

he didn't forget that when he proposed at age 24 he didn't have a ring.  he didn't even forget the day he proposed (but i did).  on the five year anniversary of our engagement, the day before i massive med school exam, he insisted  we go to the art museum.  i couldn't for the life of me understand what could possibly be so important about going on that day rather than after my test, but i went.  good thing, because he got down on his knees in a quiet spot, by a window in modern art, pulled out a ring and proposed again.

# 1  he knows and loves Jesus

this is the key that makes us work, the glue that binds us together. it's the bottom line- it's what enables him to say he's sorry when he's wrong, and forgive me when i am.  it's what helps him love and not judge, gives him strength, and hope, and the ability to go on when things are hard- even extremely hard. it's what helps him parent well, and love me well, and make the world a better place.  and he does that, where ever he is.

that is why I LOVE MIKE!
