last night in the city with mike, trees hanging with little white lights and lanterns, listening to live jazz-funk, my lip gloss tasting like italy 15 years ago, i looked up and saw 5 small stars poking through the darkness. when i looked harder there were 10- but even more. yesterday i saw a rainbow- perfect arching thing over the city- when i stopped and looked- there were two. a pair- stretching together proudly, promisingly over our heads.
the first quick look wasn't enough. i missed those other stars, i missed that other rainbow. how many times this happens when we are distracted by the louder things- the urgencies-the clock- the busy. the parts that importantly make up our days- that need to be balanced by looking up and looking hard.
this morning is quiet and cool and early. the world hasn't started yet. here the first sunlight sits only on the top of the night clouds- waking them to move away- dressing them in yellow and i am reminded to stop and look. that here is God in this stillness- holding out Her arms in another morning- being found in our moments when we open our eyes.
i'm trying to be quiet and listen to Her fullness. here. now. allowing it to be enough. to bring renewal. to enliven me for this day of heat and unknown. this day blessed with my mom and my daughters. this day when i plan to make a chocolate meringue crusted pie and clean out closets- but have no idea what will really come my way- what will be needed of me- required- what i will be called upon to face, or embrace, or bear.
that is why i need to hold these times- to cling to the stillness- to search for those less easily found stars- to find that fainter rainbow.
'when i look to the sky, the work of Your fingers,
the moon and stars, which You have set in place,
oh what am i that you are mindful of me?
that you care for me?' (psalm 8)
i am loved. known. desired. more than those stars and that sky. so i can rest in this. be in this. listen to it- i can wait for this day to begin, in it's mystery- it's easy and it's hard parts, with it's joys and sorrows. this day, this life, to unfold before me with out fear, but with promise.
