time to go back

it's time to go back in time.

i think there are two kinds of people in the world- those who read once and those who re-read books.  i'm not a re-reader of books.  i have a hard time going back in deeply.  i can skim, i can pick out the words and sentences and paragraphs that spoke to me- but i have never delved back in- i've already met the people, i've already heard their lives.  but if there was ever a book to re-read, it would be for me, 'cutting for stone.' it's our next book club book.  i'm excited- i'm nervous- how will it feel?  it is so wrapped up in my trip to ethiopia- so wrapped up in me being put back together again.

i wonder what i'll find this time- what will be uncovered - as i'm in a different place now.

we bring ourselves to what we read, and watch, and to each other in conversations, and in look, and interpretation.  we bring where we are right that moment, and who we've been.

my sister is a big reader, and a big re-reader.  she loves to go back to the familiar, to the characters she's understood- to the scenes she's known- it is safe and comfortable. zoe likes to re-read too, for similar reasons- it's predicable- she has a sense of control.   but i wonder if some people re-read because the story changes- the angle is different- the light on each person is new- because the reader has moved.

i don't know.   i'll have to see.  hopefully it will still hold me, be meaningful and not dampened by time.  hopefully it will still inspire me to 'make something beautiful of my life' as it did the first time.
