last night i had a bear grylls moment.
i ate nseenene.
grasshopper.
it had been de-winged and de-legged, but it was still crunchy.
it was in the form of a sushi spider roll (the crispy grasshopper in place of soft shell crab) and a fritter (cut up and fried with batter) it was good- but i think i still prefer haggis- although perhaps if i poured whiskey over the grasshoppers i'd feel differently.
last night the muzungu contingency on campus had an "iron chef uganda" night. i got to be one of the judges, the only muzungu judge.
three teams prepared an appetizer, a main course and a side, and dessert. there was no 'secret ingredient' but each dish needed to include typical ugandan food with an international flare. thus nseenene sushi and fritters; matoke chips with lime-chili seasoning; pumpkin biscuits, salad with a kale, chicken, and nseenene again; goat burgers with matoke fries and goat cheese, g-nut, and masala dipping sauces, and a mango milkshake; a pizza with g-nut sauce base, and ugandan toppings, and slaw. the dessert was bananas foster, a pineapple upside down cake with mango/passion fruit whipped cream, a variety of homemade ice creams and italian ices and chai.
and it was all so delicious and i'm so full.
i'm also super thankful to have such a great group of creative, interesting friends and neighbors, who also know how to make it happen in the kitchen!

That sounds like an amazing evening...although not so sure about the grasshopper part of it. Bananas foster is right up my alley though.
