favorite ugandan moments of late....

*favorite matatu slogan of the day:
"big is big" (someone is just saying)

*favorite t-shirts of the week :
          1) "oye!"
          2) a skull in the shape of africa, wearing a santa hat.....not sure the meaning

*favorite near-accident driving moment:
1) being run off the road by a large tour bus who was already in my lane and then the drivers door swung open wide, further into my lane
2) being fully run off the road by an 18 wheeler carrying three full size containers laterally! with a sign on the front saying "EXTRA, EXTRA REALLY VERY WIDE LOAD"
wish i had a photo!

*favorite gas station product:

"committed to move your world"

*favorite overly-dramatic-something-must-be-lost-in-translation moment:
while trying again to by a propane gas tank refill
me: so when do you think you might get it?
the guy:  well, maybe tomorrow.
me:  really?
the guy:  well.  i lost all hope last night.
me:  did you just say you lost all hope last night?
the guy:  yes.  i don't know when we'll get it.

*favorite jude moment:
"mommy do you know how to say goodbye in french?"
"yes, do you?"
"unhun- oli voir"
"almost, it's au revoir"
"just because you're a doctor doesn't mean you know everything!"
"that's true but i did take 5 years of french"
"well my teacher SAID oLI voir"
6 year olds are so smart!!

*favorite ages and stages moment:  while somehow talking about kissing at dinner
bryn and jude: eewwwww!
zoe: oh that's so romantic! i can't wait to be in love and get married!
bryn: i'm never getting married, i'm going to live with mama!
jude: i'm never getting married and i'm going to live alone.

favorite typical ugandan expression moment: while buying a croissant
me: is the croissant fresh?
guy: yes
me: fresh like from today?
guy: fresh like from now, fresh like from now, now (the double emphasis)

favorite word ruined:  Bliss see post :http://bestillandknowkw.blogspot.com/2011/10/bliss.html
apparently it's the number one feminine hygiene brand in uganda

favorite parent teacher meeting comment about bryn:
teacher:  he's doing so well in everything.  and even more.  we made Christmas cards for the children's  families and bryn said, "i want to make one for rosie!"  so i said, who's rosie?  bryn said, "she's one of the orphans we visited this weekend."

So in my first house here I inherited a chair and on the back was written ''big is big''. I thought'' well how useful to know''' and then noticed it everywhere. Apparently it's a lyric from a very popular song here, and not a very profound one ;)

I love your list of favorites!

You made me think of the first time one of my boys realized that children grow up and leave their parents. He was horrified and proudly declared he would ALWAYS live with Momma! All three of my children are now grown and oddly, he's the only one who does not live nearby. In fact, he is thousands of miles away!
