naked we stand

last day to sit out on the back porch on this porch furniture- because i've sold it and someones coming to get it in a few hours. it will be weird, watching the house grow empty while we're still here, but it's also kind of freeing.

when my friend abby was visiting from uganda, she asked what i'll miss most- what will be hardest for me about moving to uganda.  i told her i'd have to break it down into what i'd miss most, and what i'm most anxious about.  i'll miss my family and friends the most- hands down- fo' sho'.  miss being known- miss people not trying to interpret me- or figure me out- because they've already done that.  miss people just hearing the tone of my voice and knowing what kind of day it's been.

and what i'm most anxious about? zoe.
the good thing is, that is the same thing i'd be most anxious about if i were staying here too.  which is where the lesson is in all this.

selling things, moving away from what's familiar, leaving things, losing things, letting go-it's then you realize you don't really have anything anyway- or you are not these things that surround you- these bits are just bits.  you are not your nice rug or your prada shoes or your grill or any of it.  you are not your child- their potential- or their seeming un-potential- you are just you- stuff is stuff- and your child is their own person.  so be very careful. tread lightly.  when you peel that stuff away, you are what is left standing naked and you better know what you are with out that stuff.

someone is burning something-somewhere there is a barbecue- but it smells more like wood and less like meat- it smells like africa. and it's making me smile.
