today is the day

today is the day.

thank. God.

it is the day that mike returns to us. because i just can't do it alone anymore. i have become ms. hannigan in annie.  wandering around the house complaining about "little socks little shoes everywhere i go i can see them." right now my house is filled with 7 kids- my 4, and three stragglers from the neighborhood and the usual ones haven't even come yet.  there is popcorn all over the floor, they are watching the old shirley temple movie the little princess while whacking each other with light-sabers and, of course, the door is wide open.

i've let it go.  i give in.  i claim chaos.  i'm sure only two of them have brushed their teeth- the bedrooms are a disaster and i need to figure out lunch.

but it's okay because today is the day.

we finally did "the snowflake project". making sparkly glittery cut-out snowflakes to tape to the windows and the walls.  i was prepared to be fine with glue and glitter everywhere.  i decided that because i love sparkly things so much, it would be fine, even great, to have it everywhere.  but i hadn't prepared myself for the whining, and the impatience and the frustration that comes from small hands and big scissors, and accidentally cutting the snowflake in two, and the refusal to "fix" it, and the lack of interest in my attempt to sooth the situation...."but there is no such thing as a 'perfect' snowflake" or "all snowflakes are perfect in their own unique way!" "they are supposed to be different or crooked".  i tried to use it as an analogy for us.  for people.  for our individuality and differences and that that is where the true beauty lies.  but.  they were too busy ripping the "ruined" one and sticking the glitter onto the glue stick or the floor mat.

but it was okay, because today is the day.

and we are all ready.

we made a welcome home dad sign.  i didn't even care that they spelled it "wlecome", so cute.  i even laughed when they fought for 80% of the time we worked on the poster.
"rose is scribbling!!"
"his elbow is pushing on my arm and messing up my swimming pool drawing!" (why a swimming pool?)
"I WANT TO DRAW ON THAT LETTER!!!"
"I WAS HERE FIRST!"

yes.  we are ready.

and today is the day.
