yesterday was friday. my "work" day. as if the other days aren't. it was crazy busy- i had a migraine-and my friend gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. and by the time i got home- i was a wreck. i was happy and sad- about being able to take care of sick people, and sad that they're at the end. about her new perfect little babe, and the absence of mine. about life being so full and sustaining and yet not what i thought it would be. so i made cookies and cried. i made dinner and cried. i went to chipotle to bring the third time new parents dinner - and cried. i held that little guy and i pulled it together- just one tear- maybe.
but there was one very funny part of the day- involving zoe. when i got to work and called mike he told me he thought that possibly zoe had had her first period. OK. i've been dreading this. not because i don't want my little girl to grow up - but because there should be an unwritten rule in the universe that you can not get your period until you: a) have properly learned to tend to important personal hygiene matters- such as bathing, and b) know that it's called a 'period' or whatever you want to call it in your house. at our house- we apparently don't have either of these mastered.
when i got home, i checked out the possible evidence and concluded it was unlikely, but to be sure, i asked zoe if anything different had happened today. if maybe she'd had some bleeding.....
"no" then she got really excited and said, "mommy! is it happening to me? am i getting my bladder?"
"no. no. thank God!! you are not getting your "bladder". and by the way- it's called a period."
"oh yeah, i forgot the name."
i laughed so hard, i cried again.
