the right time

last week i bought a cheap wall clock because unlike in the US, where every possible appliance doubles as a clock, in Uganda, they don't.  the reason for the clock is so we can stop being late, teach the boys to tell time, but also so zoe can begin to learn time management.  this is a crucial skill right?  to appreciate what 15 minutes is, what it feels like, so your mind can begin to have a sense of these things.  with the clock, i can show her the time and where the hands will be in 10 minutes, i can remind her to look  up at the wall clock beside her and know.

but i think this is what she sees.
"now".

and i kind of love this about her.  because while it drives me crazy that if i say we're leaving in 5 minutes, it means nothing to her, and while i feel it's my duty as her parent to instill in her an awareness of time, i envy her lack of need for it, i love her ability to be where she is, now.

i should live more like this.

now i'm off to bed. good night.

I know, it is sad that we have to teach that awareness. I am VERY time-oriented and almost feel panicky if I think I am going to be late somewhere. My Mom used to remind me that I did not have to unlock the school doors and therefore did not need to leave so early. I wish I were a bit more relaxed about it.

When we are all in Heaven, she will be normal, and we who so need time will be the ones who will be repaired. The two of you will be on her page.
